OFFICER OF THE MONTH PROGRAM

Baltimore Police
Officers of the Month (April 2008)
OFFICERS CHRISTOPHER TIMMS AND KRZYSZTOF GESLA
BALTIMORE (MD) POLICE DEPARTMENT

Most officers can immediately recognize when something is amiss by the manner in which a person reacts to their mere presence. On the evening of November 15, 2007, Officers Timms and Gesla were patrolling an area in the southeastern district of Baltimore and observed a subject who became rather nervous as soon as he saw the officers.

The NLEOMF Officer of the Month Program is sponsored by a generous contribution from THE FORCE.

In 1996 the NLEOMF instituted the Officer of the Month program, recognizing that not all heroes are called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice. The program recognizes and honors living law enforcement officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service and devotion to duty.

THE FORCE — a company that provides clothing and safety equipment to law enforcement — gave $300,000 to sponsor the NLEOMF's Officer of the Month program for the next three years.

"This program will enable us to tell the great stories of law enforcement to a larger public. We aim to do this on an ongoing basis while educating a broader audience on the rigors and honor of this great profession," said Neal Waters, Vice President/General Manager of Government and Public Safety for VF Imagewear. "We are honored to partner with the NLEOMF on this program and look forward to supporting its continued growth over the next three years."

THE FORCE has also developed the Positive Force Award, which is given annually to a law enforcement officer who distinguishes him or herself through exemplary service that goes above and beyond the call of duty.

As part of this new partnership, each Officer of the Month recipient will automatically be considered for the annual Positive Force Award. The 2007 Positive Force Award winner is Master Officer Ken Hammond of the Ogden City (UT) Police Department. Master Officer Hammond was the NLEOMF's Officer of the Month for April 2007

In 1996, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial instituted the Officer of the Month Program to recognize law enforcement officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary service and devotion to duty. Consistent with the NLEOMF mission, this program seeks "to generate increased public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers." Although a single heroic incident may be worthy of consideration, special consideration is given to those nominees who have distinguished themselves and their profession throughout their careers.
